I started on the project after its first story screening and stayed to the very end of story development, so I witnessed at least three totally different stories before the film settled where it is now. Character designs changed. Character personalities changed. We must have brainstormed and boarded enough "fairy Olympic" events to make a six-hour movie...and then it was shaved down to fit in a half-hour television spot. But that's the story process for ya...draw a bunch of options and most hit the cutting room floor.
Here are some moments from early versions and brainstorming sessions that never made it to the film:
Rumble (of the Storm Team) bonding with Clank and Bobble. |
Possibly the hardest event of all...Berry Eating! |
Fashionista Rosetta preparing for the Games. |
The hazards of being the Garden Fairy mascot:
Here's one of the events I created: Mouse Polo. I believe it's still in the film, but it was shaved from a full sequence to a moment in a montage:
Below is a final render from a sequence I boarded, featuring Glimmer from the Storm Team.
These fairies are excited to see the Pixie Hollow Games. Hopefully you are, too!
For more info about the Pixie Hollow Games, here's an Animation Magazine article/interview with director Brad Raymond...or you can visit the Disney website.
