Disney's Private Island Castaway Cay: Day 3 of our Disney Dream Cruise

To contact us Click HERE

We arrived at Castaway Cay for day 3 of our Disney Cruise aboard the Dream Ship.  For those of you unfamiliar, Castaway Cay is Disney's privately owned Island in the Bahamas.  It's only visitors are those who come for the day via Bahamian and Caribbean Disney cruise ships such as the Dream.  Conveniently, the Disney Cruise Ship Line is able to dock right at this island port making embarkment and disembarkment as easy as walking a gangway.

There are several port adventures offered here, but we chose to simply hit the beach, swim in the ocean, and check out the other amenities of the Island on our own.  Fun discoveries included the in ocean Pelican Plunge waterslide and the Spring-a-leak water pad area for the little ones.

Castaway Cay Tips:
We brought some items from home to maximize our day at the beach fun.  Among the items we brought were $1 dollar store items such as blow up rafts and floats, snorkel masks, pails and shovels, as well as a couple bags of plastic dinosaurs.  We passed along our blow up floats and pails to other guests when we reboarded the ship.  We also brought swims socks, swimmies, hats, sunglasses, and plenty of sunblock.  Many of these items are available for purchase or rent on the island, but bringing your own is a great way to keep expenses down.

We began by playing in the sand and worked our way up to swimming in the ocean with the littler ones.  Before long they were anxious to try the slide, so hubby and our son Hayden took them to try it while I took Cordelia to get hair braids.  We met up again for lunch dining at one of the two open-air BBQ dining locations.  After lunch we continued with more sand and ocean play, some fun at Spring-a-leak, and wandered a bit before heading back to our ship.

Castaway cay was absolutely beautiful, what a perfect place to swim for the twins to experience the Ocean for their first time.

Our final evening on the ship included dinner at the amazing Animator's Palate as well as attending the show Disney's Believe.  Our dining experience and the show were both A+!  We definitely lucked out in terms of the dining rotation with saving the best for last and I'd say the same about the shows.

Summer Break is just two short weeks away for my crew.  Two weeks, yikes!  Time for this Mommy to get working on signing them up with a few summer activities to occupy at least some of that idle time.  I also need to keep restocking the house with healthy snacking options.  I don't know about your kids, but some of my kids tend to snack more when they get too terribly bored.  I find that when keeping them busy fails, keeping a variety of healthy options available is my best defense.

Summer Through the Looking-Glass: The Unlazy Days of Summer

To contact us Click HERE
My Summer breaks as a child consisted of day after day swimming at the local pool.  My childhood Summer evenings were spent playing games like ghosts in the graveyard or catching lightening bugs in saved jelly jars with perforated lids.  Each Summer break would feature a 10 day road trip to somewhere new, a trip to the zoo, a movie on a rainy day, a lemonade stand, a few backyard cookouts, a sleepover, and a couple bike rides.

In those days, kids weren't expected to make good use of their Summers.  Lazy days spent just hanging out and having fun were the norm.  They were casual Summers with a dosage or two of "wonder" sprinkled on top.

It seems that as I grew up, Summer matured as well.  Many of today's youth feel a need to utilize their Summer to the fullest, us parents too.  My kids and I rush around a bit more like the White Rabbit ("I'm late! I'm late! For a very important date! No time to say hello, goodbye! I'm late! I'm late! I'm late!") from Alice in Wonderland than the adventurous and curious Alice herself.

Summer hasn't even started and I'm struggling to find time on our "mad" calendar for a road trip and a couple backyard cookouts in between the required captains practices for football, ACT prep classes, swim lessons, a birthday party for the twins, and youth sports camps the kids consider a "must".  And when I do schedule our family road trip, it will be doubling as college visits for our oldest son.  Our Summer appears to largely be about scrambling to "catch up" while navigating to stay clear of falling down the rabbit hole. Or perhaps we need to fall inside?

It's a fine line I walk as a mom of 5.  On one hand I feel it's my duty to encourage all of my kids to take advantage of the extra time they have in the summer months to hone a skill or prep for the year ahead.  On the other hand, I need to keep the entire summer from becoming one very long working weekend.  They are still kids and I'm determined to make sure they still get some of those classic summer moments in the mix.  Does it really count as Summer if it's devoid of even one impromptu run through the sprinklers?

Let's just hope this parental obligation to balance the Summer madness for my kids doesn't result in me screaming "off with their heads" by Midsummer's Eve.

How He Made You Feel

To contact us Click HERE
I had to take photos of my twin sons holding up words the other day.  It was for their class gift to their teachers that one of the other moms is putting together.  Each child was assigned a word as part of a special message.  One of my twin boys had the word "how" and one had the word "feel".  I snapped up the needed photos quickly and sent them on to the person awaiting them.

To be honest, I was terribly distracted when I took the two portraits.  My oldest son, our 17 year old, had just learned his friend ( a classmate and fellow football team mate), was about to lose his 4 month battle with Brain cancer.  And tragicly, he did just a few days later.  The boy, known by "Mammo" to many, passed away Sunday morning.  As one might imagine, my son is very sad.  I can't even imagine how this boy's parents and other family must feel right now.

And there are those words my younger sons held up , the words "how" and "feel".

The world is full of ironies, one person's very best day was likely someone else's darkest hour.  It's an unpredictable world I send my children out into everyday and yet I still do.  I as parent continue to encourage my children to put themselves out there and be open to a wide array of feelings and experiences.  I expose them to Happiness, Pride, and Affection.  I want them to FEEL.  I want them to touch the lives of others and be open to having their lives be touched as well.
I know through my own experiences that the potential for rewards are worth risking the potential for heart breaks.  I know my son is going to be a much better man some day for having known this special boy "Mammo", many many people will be. I also know that my realizing this fact won't make my son feel better right now about losing this friend.  Now is when my son will feel things I wish he didn't have to feel like Sorrow and Grief.  Now is when my son will find himself and others asking questions, questions like how?  How did this happen?
I don't have the answer to how.  I don't really know HOW.

The photos of my younger boys were combined with photos of their fellow classmates to spell out a quote by Buechner  "They may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel."  The project turned out beautifully and I think a minor rewrite to that sentiment might be a means of comfort right now.

You may forget what he said, but you will never forget how he made you feel.

Leading Lady Intimate Apparel (GIVEAWAY CLOSED!!)

To contact us Click HERE
I've been losing weight...yay! But now I need to buy new clothes...yay! and ugh! for the pocketbook. Losing weight is great, but it certainly can get expensive when you need to replace all your clothes. I'm trying to go cheap while I'm in between sizes, but one thing I've had to go ahead and replace are my bras. As all women know, as soon as we lose weight we lose it in our chest first. And wearing a bra that's a wrong size is one of the most uncomfortable things there is.

I've been working with Leading Lady, an intimate apparel company, to learn bra fitting tips. I've heard that most women are wearing a bra that doesn't fit them properly, so I want to make sure I'm buying the right size as  my weight changes. First let me tell you a little about Leading Lady.
Leading Lady is a premiere intimate apparel company dedicated to creating comfortably functional, remarkably affordable, stylish and easy-to-wear bras, camis and sleepwear. A family owned and operated business, Leading Lady has been expertly tailoring nursing and full figure bras for top brands and retailers across North America for more than 70 years. For the first time, Leading Lady’s comprehensive line of nursing and full figure intimates – including sexy stretch lace wire-free and underwire bras, supportive and seamless sport and yoga bras, and cozy sleep and leisure bras – can be purchased directly on LeadingLady.com.
Leading Lady is proud to celebrate “Leading Ladies” everywhere through its products, programs and philanthropic activities. Leading Lady is dedicated to arming new moms with the support – physically, intellectually and emotionally – they need to nurture their babies through breastfeeding and committed to supporting a variety of organizations and issues relevant to women across the country.
The following fit tips are from Leading Lady's Director of Design, Haidee Johnstone. I hope you find them as helpful as I did!

Here are some common signs you may not be wearing the correct size:

• If you can see part of your breasts sticking out of the neckline or the underarm, your bra cup is too small for your breast.
• If the bra cup looks wrinkled on your breasts, it is probably too large.
• You should not be using any of the under-bust elastic as part of the cup. If you are, it means the cup is not big enough for your breast.
• Your bra should sit down on both your front and your back. If it is pulling up, the band is most likely too large for your frame and you will not get the correct amount of support.

Wirefree Styles
• Make sure that the center front of your bra has some “sink in,” which means the cup sinks in toward your chest.
• Look for a bra that gives you added support on the side of the cup. Styles with side slings help keep your breasts lifted for a nicer silhouette.
• Wirefree bras are often more comfortable for a full figure bust or a woman who has experienced irritation from an underwire bra.

Underwire Styles
• A properly fitting underwire bra can enhance the shape of a breast but make sure the wire sits correctly on your chest. The wire should not sit on your breast but should form a frame around your breast. Be sure the wire does not irritate your skin or breasts.
• Make sure the side height is correct for your size. The wire should fit comfortably against your body at both the underarm and the center front. If the wire is too high under the arm, you will be uncomfortable and it may cause irritation. If the wire is too low under the arm, your breast will not be completely covered. If the wire sticks out between your underarm and your arm, your breast is likely pushing the wire out because the cup is too small.

After reviewing the fit tips and Leading Lady's fit guide, I ordered their Molded Padded Seamless Underwire Full Figure Bra. It's a very nicely made bra, and has held up well to washing and frequent wear. Unfortunately, I'm in between sizes, so it doesn't fit me as well as I'd hoped. But that's my fault, because I ordered the smaller size (thinking I'll be more likely to go smaller than bigger, since I'm losing weight). Even though the bra is a little small for me right now, it's still been comfortable and I'd order from Leading Lady again in the future. I'll be keeping up with Leading Lady on Facebook and Twitter for any specials and sales (and you should too!)!

Giveaway: Apartment Guide Says 'Explore Your City' *Sponsored*

To contact us Click HERE

This post is sponsored by Apartment Guide. Are you looking for a new place to call home? Apartment Guide has tips and articles about exploring a new city and making a space your own on the Apartment Guide blog and Moving Today.

This year marks my 10th anniversary in Los Angeles. When I moved here from New York in August 2002, I have to admit that I was a little freaked out about finding an apartment. After all, in Manhattan, things are different. Crazy different.

There are brokers, for one thing. And forget about parking. Heck, forget about a car. (That actually may be a plus.) And you have to wait. And hope.

But here in L.A., things are more laid back, as you might expect. There are "For Rent" signs on practically every residential corner, whether you're looking in Echo Park or Hancock Park. And while you might have to compete with other interested parties, it's always nice to know there is another apartment available close by.

It's so funny to think about that time now, pre-CC, pre-marriage. Ian and I were in grad school, and I wanted to find a place that was close to where he was (he had moved out here first), but I also wanted it to work for me and my style -- not just be something I happened to stumble upon. I wanted to feel at home in my new city.

So what did I do? I found the only apartment building in Los Feliz that looks as if it could be in New York.

While I was able to find my Vermont Avenue apartment fairly easily, there are great resources out there such as Apartment Guide, which, if you're looking to move, not only features photos, floor plans and tips on finding a great community, the site also offers how-tos for making the most of your space, neighborhood and city.

That's especially helpful if you're coming to a city blind, without really having scoured potential great neighborhoods.

While we've moved a few times since that first set of apartments in Los Feliz -- which can be a pain -- it's also given us a chance to explore more of Los Angeles, seeing different neighborhoods and how they work. We've since left the Hollywood hipsters for the Westside, but it's always nice to go back and visit places like Skylight Books or Fred 62.

Some tips that help with transitioning from one city to another are:

* Walk around and explore. You never know what you might find on foot that you'd miss behind the wheel.
* Eat, drink or read locally. Pick out a non-chain eatery or bookstore, and people-watch. It lets you get a better feel for the place.
* Talk to your neighbors. You never know how helpful they can be.

To check out more Apartment Guide info, you can "Like" their Facebook page, follow them on Twitter @AptGuide, and "circle" them on Google+ for real-time tips and updates on exploring your city and neighborhood.

*** GIVEAWAY ***
I'm giving away one $50 American Express gift card to an L.A. Story reader.

To enter, follow @AptGuide on Twitter AND leave a comment below saying how you would use $50 to explore your city.

Good luck, and I will announce the winner in a separate post on Tuesday, May 29!

They did not tell me what to purchase or what to say about the products used, and believe that consumers and bloggers are free to form their own opinions and share them in their own words. Fellow mom and blogger JustJENN pointed me in the direction of Mighty Fine T's, a cool online clothing company that specializes in making fun -- and sometimes wickedly fun -- T-shirts, hoodies, bags, hats and other items. And not just for kids. Moms, dads (and bronies!) can also order up some trenchant fun.

CC would love the My Little Pony and Hello Kitty T's or even this tense-looking Beaker T.

Tinker Bell 3D

I took a 10-week sculpture class this summer at work and I made Tinker Bell!

I never sculpted anything more than what I made out of play-doh when I was in elementary school. It was nice to get to do this with instructions. Ron Pekar is a very supportive teacher. He also teaches a few other art classes at Disney.

I'm sending Tink to be bronzed this week (to immortalize my mistakes forever:) Her wings are made separately and will be attached later, like this.

More of the close-ups.

Pixie Hollow Games

To contact us Click HERE
It's been a long time coming (over a year and a half), but my first Disney project is about to go public. On November 19 at 7pm ET/PT, the Disney Channel will air "Pixie Hollow Games," a half-hour special from the Tinker Bell franchise.

I started on the project after its first story screening and stayed to the very end of story development, so I witnessed at least three totally different stories before the film settled where it is now. Character designs changed. Character personalities changed. We must have brainstormed and boarded enough "fairy Olympic" events to make a six-hour movie...and then it was shaved down to fit in a half-hour television spot. But that's the story process for ya...draw a bunch of options and most hit the cutting room floor.

Here are some moments from early versions and brainstorming sessions that never made it to the film:

Rumble (of the Storm Team) bonding with Clank and Bobble.
Possibly the hardest event of all...Berry Eating!
Fashionista Rosetta preparing for the Games.
Clank joining Rumble in the muscle-relaxing hot tub:
The hazards of being the Garden Fairy mascot:
Here's one of the events I created:  Mouse Polo.  I believe it's still in the film, but it was shaved from a full sequence to a moment in a montage:
Below is a final render from a sequence I boarded, featuring Glimmer from the Storm Team.

These fairies are excited to see the Pixie Hollow Games.  Hopefully you are, too!

For more info about the Pixie Hollow Games, here's an Animation Magazine article/interview with director Brad Raymond...or you can visit the Disney website.
