Crafty Holiday Gift Idea for Kids: Kiwi Crate

To contact us Click HERE

What could possibly be more fun for a child than opening up all their presents on Christmas morning?  How about the chance to open up additional gifts as they arrive on their doorstop once a month?  Subscription boxes are a fun way to treat that deserving person on your holiday list to monthly fun.

Various themed subscription boxes are all the buzz this holiday season and I will be sharing a few of my favorites I have personally checked out in upcoming posts.

To begin the Kiwi Crate is designed for the 3-7 age child that enjoys doing crafts, science, and art activities along with an adult.  Sibling add-on kits are also available, so no one misses out on the fun.

I received the December Kiwi Crate (with a sibling add-on) for my twins to help me review and it had an Antarctic Adventure theme.  Included were special booklets with complete instructions on each activity as well as all the supplies needed to create and enjoy them.

The first booklet was entitled "my penguin bowling" and the activity involves first decking out your cardboard penguin bowling pins with fun face stickers and drawing utensils.  From there you can  assemble the pins for play and use the provided balls.

The second booklet was called "my aurora postcards" and it allows for kids to channel their inner artist to create postcards of auroras in the horizon.  Supplies for this activity included oil pastel crayons and watercolors.

The fun continued with the "explore more" booklet suggesting some ice themed activities that tie into the final object in our box, an adorable fish shaped ice cube tray.

For gift subscriptions givers can choose from 3, 6, or 12 months. Shipping is free and if you order today you can take advantage of their Cyber Monday sale - 40% off the FIRST month of Kiwi Crate

Also, they are giving away $1000 in prizes from PBK, Target, Kiwi Crate, and JCREW/Crewcuts in their "Here Come the Holidays Sweepstakes":  http://bit.ly/UP70tR

BYO-Wifi: NetZero 4G HotSpot (Review & Giveaway)

To contact us Click HERE
Packing up for a fancy resort or visiting grandma for the holidays? Don't forget to bring your wifi.

I don't know about your family, but my family doesn't do the whole "there is no wifi" here thing well for long. Hubby HAS to read The Daily on his iPad each morning, the teenagers have statuses they NEED to check and hulu programs they MUST watch, and the my twin 4 year olds have a few apps like ABC Food that require a connection for full game play. And ok I admit I REALLY need my wifi too, one can't run a popular mommy blog without keeping a good eye on it right?

So how can a modern family of 7 such as mine stay connected when not at home? Well starting last week we were able to with the help of our new NetZero 4G HotSpot. It allows us to connect up to 8 of our devices like our laptops, ipads, and Galaxy Tabs via Wi-Fi to a 4G connection.

Since receiving it for review, I've found the NetZero 4G HotSpot device to be super easy to use. I simply plugged it in and it sought out a signal making it ready to go. Connecting to it from our devices was equally uncomplicated. In mere minutes I had 3 of my devices sharing it and the connection seemed surprisingly good in my area (Southwest Chicago Suburbs). NetZero currently offers coverage in over 80 cities and you can check the NetZero website to verify the areas you frequent have coverage.

It's small size has made it easy for me to just toss it in my purse and bring along to places like my daughter's dance studio, the school's gym, and even the grandparent's house. And now for the extra fun part, here's a giveaway for my readers ...

Prize:
One lucky winner will receive $300 in NetZero products and services.

Tween Girl Books: Almost Identical series by Lin Oliver

To contact us Click HERE
If you have a tween daughter who enjoys reading, I'd highly suggest a new series my daughter and I had a chance to check out recently, "Almost Identical" by Lin Oliver.  I don't normally agree to too many book reviews on "AndTwinsMake5", but two things convinced me I had to say yes to this request.

The first reason being the series was about twin girls and my 11 year old daughter has been fascinated with twins ever since the birth of her own twin brothers 4 1/2 years ago.  The second reason was the author.  Lin Oliver just happens to be the co-author of the only series of books I was able to talk my dyslexic son (now 18) into reading without too much begging.

Cordelia had the opportunity to read the first two books in the series, ALMOST IDENTICAL and TWO-FACED which both went on sale together this fall.  Without giving away too much of the plot, Cordelia tells me both books center around twin sisters Sammie and Charlie as they struggle with making new friends and becoming their own personas while still remaining close to each other.  Cordelia can't wait to read the third book, DOUBLE-CROSSED, due out next March.

Disclosure:  Much thanks to the publisher Penguin Young Readers Group for me providing me with copies of this book for my review.  All opinions are my own (and my daughter Cordelia's).

Starbox: The Starlooks Monthly Beauty Subscription Box

To contact us Click HERE
You may recall me mentioning in a post a few days ago how these monthly subscription boxes with various themes are hugely popular right now.   Well, here is one called the Starbox and it is for the girl on your list who enjoys beauty products.  You'll want to order it by Dec. 1st to insure they receive the very special box planned for December.

I received the November Starbox from Starlooks for review which included a 4 shadow compact, a glossy lipstick, and a tool to aid in mascara application.  All monthly Starboxes typically are filled with 3-4 FULL SIZED pieces of makeup, hair product, or accessories by STARLOOKS, each month varying what those items are.  Examples of past boxes can be seen here.

I really liked my first box.  I have already put the eye shadows to good use and was particularly in love with the nude tendergloss included.  And while I haven't tried the mascara tool, I think it might be just what I needed to apply mascara on my fidgety tween daughter (for dance competitions) without ended up with it all over her face.

Subscriptions are $15 per month + $1.98 for shipping and can be canceled anytime without any fees.  So about that special December box?

The December Starbox is going to contain a 15 shade eye shadow palette that retails at a $99 value!  So, if you'd like to gift a subscription to a loved one for Christmas or snatch one up for yourself, you will need to gift the box or subscribe by this Saturday, DECEMBER 1st.

Disclosure:  I received this item from the company for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' DVD Review

To contact us Click HERE

If you can get through Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted without singing Marty's now classic "Afro Circus" song -- or at least without it getting stuck in your head so much that you hear it even in the shower -- then you are a way stronger person than I.

The third installment of the DreamWorks Animation franchise, about four New York City Zoo animals who just want to get back home, is another fun take on the whole "fish out of water" -- or, in this case, lion out of Central Park -- theme.

After landing on Madagascar and then dropping down into Africa, Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) are desperate to leave and wind up making their way to Europe -- Monaco, no less -- as a pit stop on their journey back home. The opening scenes of the friends trying to cooly break into the Monte Carlo Casino is a fun, bumbling version of something out of Mission: Impossible.

Soon after, a crazed animal control officer (Frances McDormand) is hot on the gang's trail, and they need to blend in. Stat. Enter a traveling circus, and the Gotham gang are on their way. Not only that, but there's a scheduled stop in the Big Apple to boot. And while there are some intimidating characters on this circus train -- Hello, Bryan Cranston as the no-nonsense tiger Vitaly -- the zoo friends discover that they have a lot to offer this colorful troupe as well.

The two-disc Blu-ray/DVD pack (SRP: $30) is a fun combo that includes the movie, special features and the clever addition of Marty's rainbow wig. (The DreamWorks Animation and Paramount Pictures teams know their audience -- in fact, Ian has already put it on.) In addition to catching the film itself, viewers can see interviews with the cast, directors Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath and Conrad Vernon, as well as see some deleted scenes.

We're definitely a Madagascar-loving household. CC has seen the first two movies I don't know how many times. And while I had to suspend my disbelief quite a bit as the foursome popped up on the coast of Europe (guess that's an easier swim that to the East Coast of the U.S.), the movie is a clever and funny ride.

Big Sister's Coming Around

CC helps out with the baby.
It turns out that the idea of being a big sister is a lot easier than having the role thrust upon you in real life.

CC has been so excited to have a little brother, but his actual arrival has been a little bumpier than expected -- at least when it comes to sibling love at first sight.

Of course she loves him -- and has said so -- but she's been understandably skeptical about how everything is supposed to work.

Ian and I expected that. And it's OK. She wants to feel loved, secure and that she hasn't been displaced by this tiny little guy. I get it, too. She was our one and only for almost six years.

But over the weekend, she started making her way closer to her brother -- watching me change his diapers, dancing in front of him while one of us held him, and looking him over as he lay in his bassinet.

Now she's gone a big step further. While he was lying down in his Nap Nanny, crying as newborns can, CC grabbed his paci to comfort him. She squatted down to his eye level, handed him the pacifier and talked to him, singing and cooing as his eyes focused on her face, mere inches from his own.

It was amazing to see.

Mattel's Toy Story Color Splash Boat & Buddies *Giveaway*

CC, before she rips open the Mattel Toy Story boxes.
UPDATE: Congrats to Barbara, who won the Mattel Toy Story Color Splash goodies!

Bath time -- or pool time, for that matter, here in sunny SoCal -- is way more fun when you have toys to create splashy stories with. In fact, CC loves to put on a show anytime she needs to put soap to water.

That's why it was extra fun for her to receive Mattel's Toy Story Color Splash Boat (SRP: $19.99) and two Toy Story Color Splash Buddies Two-Packs (SRP: $8.99 each), as part of Mattel's Disney Insider Program, to help create imaginative aquatic adventures come bath time. She was able to try out these fun, color-changing toys and introduce a mini Buzz Lightyear, Partysaurus Rex and a particularly grumpy-looking octopus to her brand of bath-time fun.

Kids can definitely get creative with these toys, as CC did, inventing rescue stories and dividing the figures up into separate teams.

While the figures change color depending on the temperature of the water, the boat itself features flashing LED lights (what kind of party doesn't have flashing lights?), a rescue dinghy that doubles as a water scoop, a trap door and a squirting rubber ducky -- not to mention a squiddy dreadlocked Partysaurus Rex himself. (Check out a sneak peek of the upcoming toon, coming this fall.)

*** GIVEAWAY ***
I'm giving away 1 Mattel Toy Story Color Splash Boat and 2 Color Splash Buddies packs, courtesy of Mattel.

Coming Attraction: 'Littlest Pet Shop' Premieres on The Hub + 'My Little Pony'

To contact us Click HERE
'Littlest Pet Shop' on The Hub
The Hub has an exciting Saturday planned -- for those kids, including my own little girl, who are crazy about a certain group of ponies, as well as a new herd of colorful, talking creatures.

In addition to airing the season premiere of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic (Saturday at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT), The Hub will premiere a new series, Littlest Pet Shop (Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT).

CC and I caught a sneak peek of Littlest Pet Shop, and it looks like a clever and colorful Saturday morning addition. The show centers on Blythe Baxter, a little girl who has moved to the Manhattan-esque big city with her pilot dad (sans mom, but that goes unexplained). Blythe is precocious and very sure of herself -- a positive trait I love for my daughter to see.

In fact, when she bumps into a couple of "mean girls," she stands up for herself from the get-go. Talk about a great example for little girls.

Blythe and her father move into an apartment above the Littlest Pet Shop, which is in danger of closing. In the opening two episodes, this fashion-forward little girl discovers that she can talk to the little critters -- which include a monkey, dog, gecko, hedgehog (not a porcupine!) and a skunk -- and that they need her help.

But can Blythe help save the pet shop?

The show is gorgeously animated, with candy-colored animals, cityscapes and fashion. It definitely pops off the screen. What's also interesting is the pairing of Littlest Pet Shop alongside My Little Pony. Both shows seem to have the same smart-girl sensibilities. That is, they're headlined by clever girls who aren't afraid to show off their smarts -- or their (often dry) senses of humor. They're also confident enough to put friends in their place, should they go off track.

CC enjoyed the episodes -- and especially loved when Littlest Pet Shop dog Zoe burst out into song. Look forward to checking out more!

The Odd Life of Timothy Green Blu-ray & DVD (Giveaway)

To contact us Click HERE
Disney’s “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” is set to release on December 4, 2012, just in time for the holiday season. The film will be available on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, DVD, High Definition Digital and On-Demand platforms.

I was excited to receive my review copy yesterday having heard it was a must view film for our family of 7 to enjoy this coming holiday season.  Unfamiliar with the storyline?  In summary, Timothy Green is a "highly imaginative story about a happily married couple who can’t wait to start a family but can only dream about what their child would be like. Then one stormy night young Timothy shows up on their doorstep. Soon they and the small town in which they live learn that sometimes the unexpected can bring some of life’s greatest gifts."

The message I took away from it was one of accepting what life throws at you and truly making the most of it.  Each day may come with it's own set of surprises and hardships, and it is up to us to make the best of them.

UrbanSitter Connects Babysitters, Friends *Sponsored*

To contact us Click HERE
Looking for a new and better way to book babysitters? Try UrbanSitter! Founded by four busy parents, UrbanSitter is an online resource to find sitters recommended by people you know—so you feel secure in hiring someone you trust.

Everyone knows it's tough to find a babysitter. In fact, to tell you the truth, Ian and I don't really have one for CC, let alone Baby Will.

You might remember that we had our awesome nanny/sitter for CC when she was smaller -- Stephani, whom we trusted with all of our lives. But since then, we've relied mostly on visits from my mom. Which is kind of sad, because she doesn't come that often.

Part of it is that I want someone I can trust. Another part is that I'm kind of picky. One of CC's camp counselors gave me her card this summer, and on it she said she helped kids with tutoring. Only she spelled it "tudoring." Yikes. Maybe that's just the editor in me, but it was a total turnoff.

That's why I was excited to check out UrbanSitter, courtesy of a "speed-dating" event hosted by the online company and MomsLA. Not only did I get to check out an innovative way to find potential sitters, but I also got to meet a few candidates, too.

What's awesome is that the site syncs with your social networks, so you can see which of your Facebook friends have hired a particular sitter. Great for getting trusted info, because friends can also review the sitters they've chosen.

You can also search for sitters based on date and time, whether they have had a background check, hourly rates and experience. You can also pay by credit card right on the site. (That's a real convenience for a lot of families. No more digging in your purse at the end of the evening -- or quickly stopping by the ATM.)

Not only that but you can also get email reminders and check out your sitter's bookings.

And, did I mention the service is free?! Can't wait to book my first night!

Check out UrbanSitter's sweepstakes, where you could win 1 year of free babysitting!

(Disclosure: This is a sponsored post for MomsLA and UrbanSitter. However, all opinions expressed are my own.)

To enter, please leave a comment describing your child's favorite bath-time adventure.

For more chances to win, follow me on Twitter and retweet this giveaway. I'm at @la_story. Or you can "Like" the L.A. Story Facebook page and share the giveaway.

Just be sure to leave extra comments telling me you did so.

Good luck, and I will announce the winner on Friday, Nov. 9!

Jimmy D's Breakfast Minis (GIVEAWAY CLOSED!)

To contact us Click HERE
Is your schedule as packed as mine is? We tend to get super busy this time of year with family activities; Fall Festivals, Trick or Treating, or just playing outside in the cooler weather. Breakfast can be a free for all, especially on the weekends when we're trying to rush out the door. Jimmy Dean thought they could help me with that morning rush, and asked me to sample their new Jimmy D's Breakfast Minis.

Jimmy D's Breakfast Minis are cute little breakfast sandwiches featuring turkey sausage. Breakfast Minis contain 11 grams of protein and only 230 calories per serving, and are ready to eat in less than two minutes. Seriously! You just pop them in the microwave! Here is a shot of them fresh from the microwave:
They taste really great too! They're a perfect size for kids, or pair them with some yogurt or fresh fruit for yourself. I don't usually keep frozen breakfasts like this on hand, but if I know we have a crazy morning coming up I'd definitely buy Jimmy D's Breakfast Minis again. You can't beat the convenience factor, and I like that they offer a good amount of protein.

You'll also want to know that Jimmy Dean is hosting a fun sweepstakes on their Facebook page called “52 Ways to Deliver Great Days,” where each week for the next year Jimmy Dean is giving away a different prize (they change up the prize every Monday) to their fans who answer the question of the week about how they help deliver great days to their family and friends. To enter, visit their Facebook page (a text entry is worth 1 sweeps entry, photo is worth 5 sweeps entries and video is worth 10 sweeps entries).
